5880. Caisson, or Pneumatic caisson : A watertight, cylindrical or rectangular chamber dug out or sunk into the ground surface for access to the bed of a stream or body of water. It is used in under water construction to protect workers from water pressure and soil collapse. If closed at the top and water is excluded by air pressure it is called a `Pneumatic caisson`.
