The objectives of the ICID are to advance the science and art of irrigation, drainage and flood control. ICID Journal is a prestigious peer-reviewed publication and enables ICID to accomplish its objectives of publishing original papers on scientific, engineering and socio-economic issues associated with irrigation and drainage in a clear, concise and uniform style that is easily understood by an international audience. ICID has a half century of experience in the promotion and transfer of water and land management technology and related issues.

ICID Journal plays an important role as the world struggles to meet the food demands of a rapidly growing population. It is a publication that directly addresses the management of water resources for agriculture and flood control. The potential impact of the Journal on the transfer of technology is large as is its potential for continued success. Formerly, this used to be published as ICID Bulletin since 1952. Its title has since been changed to ICID Journal since 1995. ICID Journal was presented in two issues upto 1998. ICID has brought 3 issues in 1999. ICID Journal - Guide to Authors

Introduction

The objectives of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage are to advance the science and art of irrigation, drainage and flood control. To facilitate accomplishing these objectives it publishes scientific, engineering and socio-economic original papers that are clear, concise and uniformly presented in a style readily understood by an international audience. This audience may have limited command of the language in which the article is written.

This guide has been prepared for authors preparing papers for publication in the ICID Journal. A peer-reviewed publication, the ICID Journal was previously (up to 1994) called the ICID Bulletin. The suggestions in this guide are for everyone involved in preparing papers for the ICID Journal.

In brief, authors should :

  • write in English or French.

  • present their material simply and concisely.

  • seek several reviews by co-workers before submitting their manuscript.

  • carefully review their manuscript to eliminate errors, superfluous material and repetition, and check for accuracy of the references cited.

  • use figures and tables sparingly and plan their format to make effective use of page space.

  • provide three (3) copies of the complete paper, typed and double-spaced on A4 or 215 x 280 mm paper.

  • include one (1) set of figures suitable for reproduction.

  • submit papers not exceeding ten (10) printed pages in the ICID Journal, or less than sixteen (16) pages double-spaced typescript including the abstract, tables, figures and references. Most articles should not exceed eight (8) pages or thirteen (13) manuscript pages.

  • seek editorial assistance from their National Committee or employing organization when preparing a manuscript in a language that is not their mother tongue.

Note : In special situations where the authors mother tongue is neither of the two official languages of ICID, the Journal Editor will arrange for assistance to help with language difficulties.

Organization

Detailed, historical introductions should be avoided, but the main theme of the paper should be outlined briefly. Continuity with earlier work should be established by reference to recent papers and reviews, which do not need to be summarized. Experimental methods should be clearly described, but without detail unless they describe totally new procedures. Papers should be divided into several parts to make them easier to understand.

Title. The running title of the article should not be more than seventy-two (72) characters including spaces. The title should contain key words that describe the subject and scope of the paper.

Abstract. Each manuscript should be preceded by a concise abstract of the main results in English and French. Important results expressed in the figures should be referred to following the relevant statement as (Fig.1, 4, and etc.).

Footnotes. These should be numbered consecutively. Footnote Number (1) should identify the source of the article. The Editor will add "date received." Footnote Number (2) identifies the title(s) and address(s) of the author(s).

Tables. Number the table consecutively. Do not repeat information contained in the text or presented in the figures.

Figures. Good figures help readers to understand the article. Typewritten material is not usually acceptable for figures. If possible, use photographs or drawings that can be reduced to a half-printed page width (120 mm). Label each original photograph or drawing on the back with the author's name and number of the figure using a soft-lead pencil. Each figure should have a concise descriptive legend. Important results expressed in the figures should be referred to in the text following the relevant statement as (Fig.1, 4, and etc.).

Line drawings. Submit original or glossy prints of the drawings near the desired final size in the Journal. The inscriptions on the final size should be at least two (2) mm high.

References. These should contain only works referred to in the text. For journal articles, provide names and initials of all authors, year of publications, full title of paper, journal abbreviated as in the Bibliographic Guide for editors and authors, volume number and first and last page numbers. Books are cited by author names, year of publication, full title, edition, publisher and place of publication, and total pages. References should be listed in alphabetical order by the first author's name, or team of authors, in chronological order.

Half-tone illustrations. Submit well-contrasted photographic prints, trimmed at right angles and near the desired final size. Inscription should be about two (2) mm high.

Length of papers. Papers submitted for publication should not exceed ten (10) printed pages in the Journal. Complete manuscripts (double-spaced) typescript including the abstract, tables, figures and references should not exceed sixteen (16) pages. However, most good articles can be presented in eight (8) pages with the complete manuscript not exceeding thirteen (13) pages. Page charges will be assessed for longer articles.

Notes used in editing manuscripts

  1. In English, use either Oxford or Webster Dictionary, but not a mixture.

  2. Each table and each figure must :

    (a) have a heading or a caption that permits the table or figure to stand on its own;

    (b) be referred to in the text at least once;

    (c) show appropriate units of measurement (preferably metric); and,

    (d) have uniform accuracy of measurement within (but not necessarily between) each element.

  3. Each reference must :

    (a) be cited at least once in the text; and,

    (b) contain enough information such that the reader can find it in a technical library (see the ICID Journal, op cit.).

  4. Numbers should be written out as words from zero through nine and when they are the first word in a sentence. Try to avoid the latter.

  5. Avoid using a period (.) in abbreviations and initials unless the context is not clear.

  6. Do not pluralize abbreviations.

  7. Avoid using the possessive case.

  8. Use the active rather than the passive voice.

General

Papers prepared for publication in the ICID Journal should be submitted to the Journal Editor complete with the author's address and with a copy to the author's National Committee. Authors of some papers presented at Congresses, Regional or other ICID-sponsored Conferences may be asked by the session convenor or Journal Editor to revise their paper based on discussions and submit the paper for peer-review and publication in the Journal.

The Journal Editor forwards two copies of the manuscript to an Associate Editor (or co-Editor) who is best qualified to work with the peer-reviewers on the specific subject and language of the paper. The associate Editor obtains three (3) independent reviews by qualified peers (referees). Upon receipt of the reviews and the recommendations of the reviewers, the Associate Editor reviews the comments and returns the manuscript to the author recommending :

  1. publication as is;

  2. return to the author(s) for minor revisions as recommended;

  3. return to the author(s) for major revisions and resubmit for a second review; or

  4. recommend to the Journal Editor that the manuscript is unsuitable for publication in the Journal and then return to the author(s) for their use as desired.

Manuscripts accepted for publication will be reviewed by the Journal Editor for format and forwarding to the Central Office in New Delhi for printing. To ensure the technical quality of the ICID Journal, the senior author will be asked to review the galley proofs. After publication, the author(s) will receive fifty (50) copies free-of-charge and may purchase additional copies at a price based on printing costs.

This Guide to Authors for organizing and preparing manuscripts can be obtained from the author's National Committee.
