2932. Visvesvaraya gates : A system of vertical lifting fixed-roller gates operated by Whiting`s counterweight system. Additionally they enable; (i) better sealing in closed position by tapering the bearing surfaces of the gates and the sluice frame in opposite directions and (ii) better control by tagging a group of gates on to a single counter-balance mechanism. To reduce the dead counterweight, some of the gates in a group may be lowered below the crest while the remaining may be raised above high flood level. Water is admitted into the weight chamber through several sluice valves located at different elevations. Named after its designer (illustrated).
