5231. Land grading, or Land smoothing : The process of forming the surface of land to predetermined grades so that each row or surface slopes to a drain. Land grading for surface drainage consists of forming the landscape by cutting, filling and smoothing to plane continuous surfaces and is a one-time operation involving the transport of earth according to specified cuts and fills based on the predetermined grades. Land grading for surface drainage differs from land levelling or planing for irrigation in that, for drainage, no uniform grade is required. Scarification may be required subsequent to land grading to break up soil that has become compacted by the construction machinery.
