October 2008 Lahore, Pakistan International Workshop on Service Oriented Irrigation Management: Key to Modernization, jointly organized by ICID Working Group on Modernization of Irrigation Services (WG-MIS) and the FAO-Land and Water Development Division, October 2008, Lahore, Pakistan. Scope : The challenge facing irrigation is immense. Pressure on water resources are increasing, demands from other sectors are increasing, and the demand upon irrigated agriculture is also increasing. Furthermore, many studies show that irrigation performs less well than it could. Many improvements in irrigation are needed, including infrastructural interventions in canal systems, better management procedures and the need for measures being evaluated for cost-benefit. Over the last decades, improvement of irrigation has shifted from rehabilitation (resetting the original irrigation network) through upgrading (introducing some new elements) to modernization. The aim of modernization is to improve the service provided to the farmers.
